British Values Statement

At Stag Lane Primary School we nurture children so that they become future members of society, who will treat others with respect and tolerance. Our school offers a rich and diverse curriculum which helps children to understand and relate to people and their place in society. We promote and embed the following British values:
  • Democracy
  • The rule of law
  • Individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs

Democracy

Children are encouraged to debate topics of interest, express their views and make a meaningful contribution to the running of the school.  We hold our own elections every year to vote for Head boy, Head girl, school prefects and school councillors. Once elected, they actively get involved in the day to day running of the school and meet with staff to discuss a range of school based, local or national issues. They represent the voice of their peers.

The Rule of Law

We have a clear positive behaviour policy, with clear school rules which help children to make good choices about their behaviour. We are a Rights Respecting School which means each class draws up their own charter at the beginning of the school year. Both adults and children sign Class Charters agreeing to these, which are clearly displayed in the classroom. These rules are revisited regularly through PSHCE lessons, assemblies and class circle times. Children are encouraged to respect the law and visits from services such as the Police, and Fire help reinforce the message.

Individual Liberty

At school, children are encouraged and given the freedom to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment, As a Rights Respecting School, children understand their rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Child and who is responsible for upholding these. Through our PSHCE lessons, children discuss decision making and their consequences.

e.g., E-Safety lessons equip children with the skills to make safe choices and empower them to know their rights. They also have key responsibilities in school, like being Playground Buddies or a library monitor.

Mutual Respect

Our school ethos is built around mutual respect. High levels of mutual respect are developed through relationships. We are an inclusive school, where everyone is valued and has a contribution to make. Our school rules emphasise choice ie to ‘Do the Right thing’, and reflect on UNICEF’s Rights of the Child.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Stag Lane Primary is an extremely diverse school. Different faiths and beliefs are explored and celebrated through assemblies, often with parent/carers.  Religious Education and PSHCE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others. We actively encourage members of different faiths and religions to share their knowledge, religious practices and special celebrations. Our integrated curriculum includes opportunities for texts from a range of different cultures and different Year Groups will visit different places of worship to further raise their awareness of different places, faiths and beliefs.
